Features of the Motorola Droid 2

Comments Off

The Motorola Droid series of phones has been wildly successful on Verizon since it first launched over two years ago. And though the original Motorola Droid is a more-than-capable phone even in 2010, its success has merited a successor. The Motorola Droid 2 has built on the original Droid’s accessories and has found a soft spot among mass texters and those new to Android devices.

Launched to directly compete with Apple’s extremely successful iPhone smart phone, the Motorola Droid has been the highly-successful, keyboard-wielding smart phone of choice on Verizon since its launch over two years ago. The Motorola Droid 2 has recently become the successor of the original Droid. This follow-up model by Motorola also comes with a keyboard, which puts it into a special category of smart phone that boldly bucks the touch screen trend. And batteries are made to last long — an entire day long, in fact.

Despite their widespread use and trendiness, it may surprise you that touch-sensitive are not all that popular among Android users.

In fact, in a recent survey, a majority of Android smart phone users said that they preferred to have a physical keyboard in addition to a touch screen one. For avid text messaging users, the original Motorola Droid was the go-to Android device on Verizon; Motorola has decided to build on this success by bundling the follow-up Droid 2 with a similar keyboard. But this new keyboard will surprise a lot of text messaging fanatics: it is far superior to its predecessor and makes texting even easier. The buttons are much easier to press and feels more durable, resulting in faster and accurate text messaging.

First-time smart phone users will love the Motorola Droid 2 as well.

For many people, the hardest part about switching form a so-called “feature” phone to a smart phone is learning to use a touch screen. With the Motorola Droid 2?s improved keyboard, this hurdle is cleared before it is even encountered. Users also get a multi-directional navigation key, just like those found on the standard flip-phones of years past. And accessories make it easy to access features like GPS and the Android car dock without so much as a button-press.

The holster is a thing of the past, with a special new R2-D2 model that skins the phone into a Star Wars robot ready to battle through the day, from application to application, text message to text message, email to email. It is the first such Droid phone for Star Wars fanatics, and makes the perfect addition to any Star Wars geek’s collection of memorabilia and merchandise.

The need for Motorola Droid 2 accessories is on the rise. Head over to Talkie Tech to find the most selection of Motorola Droid 2 cases. We offer .95 standard shipping and our prices are extremely competitive.

Notable Features of the Motorola Droid 2

The Motorola Droid 2 is an upgrade that was based from the ground-breaking Android powered Droid. If you expected to see a huge list of additions to this new deivce then think again. In fact, many phone enthusiasts consider the release of the Droid 2 as an attempt by Motorola to stabilize its price. This is not to say that the phone is a bad one- however, Motorola let the opportunity of upgrading the Droid’s slide-out keyboard pass.

Although they look very similar in style, the Droid 2 does have a slightly different look to it. The easiest way to differentiate the two is a chrome frame around the top of the latest version. Operationally, the slide-out keyboard has been incorporated with individual directional buttons unlike the square toggle that was in the first Droid. The four navigation buttons have been rearranged to Menu, Home, Back, Search from Back, Menu, Home and Search and there are minor differences in the implementation of the Android 2.2.

The Droid’s impressive camera has been drastically improved to a widescreen 5 MP that fits more images in the frame.

Compared to other high MP cell cameras, shots taken indoors, with or without the flash, stay surprisingly in focus. Outdoor photos come out crisp and colorful. However, indoor shots tend to come out grainier while outdoor photo colors are not true as they tend to bias towards the blue end of the spectrum. Rather than high-def video recording, the most surprising shortcoming of the Droid 2 is the WVGA. Video details are fuzzy especially when they are viewed on a standard PC.

Users who prefer a physical QWERTY keyboard may be falsely attracted by the Droid 2. Motorola improved the slide-out QWERTY keyboard from the flat, flush keys in the original to humped ones.

However, you will still need to press hard for action as they still have little feedback or spring. Moreover, you are bound to spend more time editing as the thumbs will fly over the widescreen QWERTY. If you are looking for speed, the keyboard delivers it. Accuracy on the other hand is not so high with this high flying keyboard.

Just like the original, the Droid 2, also has a very vivid and colorful display. It also has a Blockbuster app but lacks any of the video offerings from MobiTV or Verizon. The phone’s widescreen makes viewing side-loaded movies great. However, the Droid X with its 4.3-inch screen, will be a better choice if you are looking for a Droid as a PMP. The original Droid problem of not resuming the last music you left of when switching between multimedia apps has been solved in the Droid 2. While conversations are loud and clear in the Droid 2, listeners on the other end may hear some form of muddiness coming through. Because the long, thin speaker is located on the back of the device, sound quality forthe speakerphone and multimedia listening might not be to your liking.

The Motorola Droid 2 battery is of the same size like the first Droid but does more; it has nearly 10 hours of talk time. The battery can last nearly 2 days with W-Fi and Bluetooth running, picture-taking and sharing, Web surfing and semi-regular phone calling before it may need recharging. However, connecting to 3G hot spots will drain the battery faster. With accessories, you can customize the phone to your specification. You can replace the 8GB memory cards with higher capacity ones, replace your chargers and adapters, get different cases among others. The 2 holster has a reasonably solid spring clip. However, the phone has a flaw that causes the battery cover to easily slip off.
